CBD American Shaman Review: Must-Read Before Buying

If you are the kind of person who enjoys shopping at flea markets and vintage stores for the sheer variety of unique and unexpected items, you’re going to love CBD American Shaman. This company carries a mind-blowing array of products, from the standard CBD tinctures, capsules and gummies to unique items like CBD honey sticks, coffee and Rice Krispie treats. Anything you can imagine wanting to find as a CBD product will probably show up on the CBD American Shaman website, or at one of their more than 130 brick-and-mortar locations.

However, if you want a consistent, dependable product you can count on to be labeled accurately every time, you may wish to shop elsewhere. CBD American Shaman seems to be hit or miss with quality (much like the wellness booth at your local Saturday-afternoon swap meet). The labeling and product descriptions are inconsistent, customer service will take all your personal contact information and then never get back to you, and the CBD is mostly overpriced with little justification.

The lab results we obtained from a recent sample indicated that the tincture we had was pure and accurately labeled, but there is currently an open class-action suit against the company claiming that several products were sent to a third-party lab for testing after purchase, and the results showed that they contained heavy metals, mycotoxins and fungicides at levels higher than the amounts deemed safe. There have also been complaints that products advertised as being THC-free did contain THC.

There is no denying that some of CBD American Shaman’s products are potentially excellent. The company makes a unique nano-CBD formula that is more bioavailable than traditional CBD, most items are available in a long list of flavors and some customers swear by the company’s products. Additionally, shopping at a brick-and-mortar location may land you excellent service with a knowledgeable clerk.

The issue is simply that this company and its products are not entirely reliable or forthright, in an industry where transparency is of the utmost importance. CBD American Shaman may be an interesting place to browse for the experienced CBD shopper, but we would not recommend making your first few CBD purchases here. Go with a company that has a stellar reputation first, so you know what to look for. Then you can hop into the rabbit hole that is the CBD American Shaman website knowing you are well informed and prepared for anything.

  • Huge line of products
  • Full-spectrum, broad-spectrum and CBD isolate formulas available
  • Wide variety of flavor options for most ingestible products
  • Brick-and-mortar locations increase accessibility
  • In-house hemp farming and distillation give CBD American Shaman full traceability

  • Website and packaging are inconsistent
  • Open class-action suit against the company claiming higher levels of toxins than deemed safe

About CBD American Shaman

Vince Sanders founded CBD American Shaman in 2015 in Mission, Kansas. He had taken care of a sick family member and saw that CBD helped alleviate their suffering. He wanted to help others find the same relief. Sanders has since dedicated all his efforts to creating a company that provides CBD to help people find a sense of calm, with relief from pain and anxiety.

CBD American Shaman offers a compassionate care program, offering its CBD at a lower price for people who are veterans, who are disabled, or who have a low income. Qualifying customers receive a 30 percent discount on all purchases over $34.99.

The requirements for receiving the price reduction are not clear, and you have to create an account with the company to even access the application—which asks for your personal information, a detailed description of your situation or disability, your doctor’s name and phone number, and documentation of a diagnosis or prescription.

Points of Interest

While we are all for people getting second chances, CBD American Shaman’s founder has a questionable history with the law. Two decades ago, Sanders went to prison for organizing and financing a $2.5 million marijuana scheme [1]. Though he did not divulge the details in a 2019 interview with Kansas City radio station KCUR, Sanders was quoted as grinning and stating that it was actually much more than that.

Besides prison time for the owner 20 years ago and a class-action suit in progress over product labeling and quality [2], CBD American Shaman has become notorious for its shady business practices. A 2018 lawsuit filed by Kirby stated that Sanders had recruited at least 20 door-to-door salespeople from the company to open American Shaman franchises. Additionally, there have been complaints that CBD American Shaman squeezes out smaller independent CBD shop owners by trademarking their names before they have a chance to even open their doors.

Finally, there are several complaints with the Better Business Bureau about the company not following through on their promise of a refund if the customer is dissatisfied [4]. Some of these complaints appear to have been resolved, but there are no official statuses on most grievances.

CBD American Shaman’s Process

CBD American Shaman grows its own hemp, mostly on a 1,000-acre farm in Montana (one of the largest hemp-producing states in the U.S.). According to the company’s website, the plants are grown naturally and sustainably, with no pesticides or harmful chemicals.

The Montana property includes a processing facility where the extraction takes place, so your CBD is easily traceable from seed to sale—if you can find any information about it, that is. When all growing and processing happens in-house, it can be a great thing for quality. It’s not so great, however, if the company is disreputable.

Companies that do everything internally have all the control. They can be stringent about their process, monitoring everything from soil quality to the finished product. However, when the processing facility is on the same property as the farm, some levels of oversight by state agricultural authorities can slip through the cracks. A reputable company will keep everything transparent through the whole process.

Testing and Extraction

Wiped-film distillation is not one of the most commonly used methods of processing hemp for CBD, but it does result in a more concentrated, smoother distillate than some other methods. It is also well suited for continuous batches on a large scale. One disadvantage of wiped-film distillation, however, is that it is difficult to separate THC from CBD with this process.

States that have hemp-growing programs require farmers to test their hemp either just before or just after harvest to confirm THC content and purity. Most states require additional testing once the CBD is processed. CBD American Shaman states that it also tests every batch to confirm purity and potency.

Lab Results

Viewing the lab results before making a purchase from a CBD company is one of the most dependable ways you can confirm what you are getting. Independent labs test for toxins and heavy metals, and they also measure the amount of CBD, terpenes and minor cannabinoids in a product. You should always be extra cautious when a company does not freely share its third-party lab results.

Even though CBD American Shaman claims to use an independent lab to test every batch of the CBD it produces, there are no results to be found on the website unless you actually make a purchase. You can then enter the batch number into a search bar to pull up lab results, but those are as inconsistent as the product descriptions themselves.

Product Lineup

CBD American Shaman carries an incredible variety of products, including unique edibles, gummies and teas, pre-rolled hemp joints, CBD tinctures, pet products, topicals and even CBD-infused water. In addition to the wide selection, many products are customizable in one way or another.

For example, you can choose between full-spectrum and THC-free CBD, and between nano-CBD and regular CBD. Oils come in a variety of flavors and concentrations, and you can even find CBG and CBN products. Have fun browsing through the array of products, but be careful to read product descriptions before you place your order.

  • Water-Soluble Hemp Oil: This is CBD American Shaman’s nano-CBD formula. The regular-strength option comes in a 30mL bottle, with 300mg of CBD. There are five flavors to choose from. The full-strength formula comes in a 15mL bottle with 450mg of CBD or a 30mL bottle with 900mg of CBD, and this one is unflavored. You can choose between THC-free and full-spectrum, but it is not clear whether the THC-free option is broad-spectrum or isolate.
  • Terpene-Rich Hemp Oil Tincture: In the standard CBD oil, you can choose between full-spectrum and THC-free formulas, and there are five different flavors. It comes in a 30mL bottle, and concentrations include 150mg, 300mg, 450mg and 750mg.

CBD Capsules

  • Concentrated Hemp Oil Capsules: Choose between 30 and 60 capsules per bottle. Each capsule contains 15mg of CBD. It is unclear whether these are full-spectrum, broad-spectrum or CBD isolate.

CBD Topicals

  • Terpene-Rich Topical Serum: This serum is like the water-soluble formula, but it also contains dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) to help penetrate the skin and polyethylene glycol (PEG) 400, a standard ingredient found in various pharmaceutical products. The concentration is 30mg of CBD per mL, and you can choose between bottles with 15mL or 5mL, and a 10 mL roll-on.
  • CBD Body Lotion: Starting with a base of cocoa butter and shea butter, then scented with lavender oil, this lotion comes in a travel-sized 2-ounce bottle, or an 8-ounce bottle. It contains 15mg of CBD per ounce.

CBD Gummies

  • Nano CBD Gummies: We know that these gummies are made with American Shaman’s nano CBD, but it is unclear whether they are full-spectrum or free of THC. Based on product photos, each gummy contains 10mg of CBD, and you can choose between peach and watermelon flavors. Available in packages of 15 or 30.
  • Energy CBD Gummies: The energy CBD gummies have added green tea, and vitamins B6 and B12 to boost your energy levels. These lemon-flavored gummies contain 25mg of CBD each, and they only come in packages of 10.

CBD for Pets

  • Soft-Chew Dog Treats: These beef-flavored treats come in bags of 40, and each treat contains 2mg of CBD. There is no ingredient list for these treats and the product photo is unreadable, so it is unclear which CBD formula is used and what else they are made from.
  • Canine or Feline CBD Hemp Oil Tincture: This tincture is similar to the hemp oil tincture made for humans, except it is made with a very low dose. Both come in a 30mL bottle with 300mg of CBD. You can choose THC-free or full-spectrum formulas for both your dog and your cat.

Lab Results and CBD Quality

We sent CBD American Shaman’s 450mg full-spectrum CBD to a third-party lab to be tested, and were pleased to find that this one was free of toxins, pesticides and heavy metals. It contained the amount of CBD labeled, but its cannabinoid profile fell flat for a full-spectrum formula.

Our CBD American Shaman Shopping Experience

The shopping experience with CBD American Shaman is as unique as it is frustrating. While it may be fun to browse this website and see all the different items this company offers, it is challenging to navigate and sparse on actual information. Products are pretty well organized by category, but once you get into the individual categories, all sense of composure is gone.

It is difficult to tell the difference between some of the products, it is unclear which CBD formulas are being used and ingredient lists are inconsistently available. Some of the product pages include photos of the ingredient lists on the packaging, but many are unreadable. Additionally, some of the product descriptions do not match the labeling in the photos.

If you are feeling wary of doing your shopping online, or if you want to talk to someone who can answer questions for you, you could always stop at one of CBD American Shaman’s shops. The company has more than 130 locations across the nation, so there is a good chance you will find a franchise somewhere close to you.

Shipping and Returns

CBD American Shaman offers free shipping on all U.S. orders over $99, and they ship to all 50 states. The company will not ship orders of any products that contain THC to Idaho, Wyoming, Texas, Louisiana or Kansas, due to legal restrictions in those states. Otherwise, you can expect your order to be processed as early as the next day.

If you place an order on the website, you have a full 45 days to make a return if you are not satisfied with your products. This is a satisfaction guarantee, meaning that you can open and try your product virtually risk-free. If you make a purchase from a franchise location, you only have 30 days to make your return. Any purchases made at an authorized retailer are subject to the merchant’s individual return policies.

Final Thoughts on CBD American Shaman

CBD American Shaman is an interesting and fun company to browse if you get excited about variety. The fact that there are franchise locations makes shopping and asking questions face-to-face convenient.

The company carries a cornucopia of CBD products, and you will never get bored with your daily dose of CBD. Not only does American Shaman carry all the standard items like CBD oils, gummies and topicals, but it is also full of surprises like CBD popcorn, brownies and honey.

However, CBD American Shaman has some moderately shady practices that may affect your decision to make any purchases with this company. In addition to its business dealings being questionable and the owner’s criminal background, a class-action lawsuit over issues with deceptive advertising regarding purity is currently pending. Also keep in mind that there are no lab results available on the website without first making a purchase, and you have to create an account in order to contact the company with any questions unless you walk into a store.

The sample we had turned out to be free of toxins, pesticides and heavy metals, and it was labeled accurately. Our biggest complaint was the high price and weak cannabinoid profile for a product that was supposed to be full spectrum. Check out CBDStudy’s review of CBD American Shaman for more product details.

Since the company offers a 45-day satisfaction guarantee, and it is clear that at least some of their products are safe and accurately labeled, we would generally be inclined to say that there’s no harm in giving CBD American Shaman a try.

However, there are several complaints that the customer-service department is basically nonexistent, and customers have reported having a hard time actually getting a refund on their purchases. Because of this, we would suggest using extreme caution when buying from this site. Better yet, just shop elsewhere.
