EGREMONT — A company seeking to build a cannabis facility in a subdivision off Pumpkin Hollow Road has agreed to reduce the size of the building in response to pushback from residents.
James Valeriani, attorney for Sparkboro Corp./Prestige Worldwide LLC, told the Zoning Board of Appeals on Thursday that his clients are working with the subdivision’s association and seller Benjamin Barrett to shrink the scale of the project. He also asked for more time to return to the board with the amended plans, and another hearing to discuss the proposal was set for Oct. 14.
Sparkboro’s initial plan was to convert Barrett’s 12,500-square-foot wood veneer plant into a facility for cannabis cultivation and manufacturing. But last month the company proposed a 60,000-square-foot building and a busier enterprise, the combined size of which would rival that of local strip malls off Route 7.
Several residents said they were dismayed to only just learn of the plans. Abutters Fred and Sally Harris said they hadn’t been given proper notice of the hearing. But Valeriani said that legally, all was in good order regarding “compliance,” including abutter noticing.
Though not legally required, resident Christopher Souris said the company should hold another community meeting; only two people attended one earlier this month.
Valeriani eventually agreed to it.
